REMEMBERING SHEIKH HAMDAN

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has sadly passed away today. He had sadly been unwell for a few months. In Dubai, a 10 day mourning has been declared and flags will be flown at half mast as a mark of respect. Sheikh Hamdan was the brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (the current ruler of Dubai). Born on December 25th 1949, Sheikh Hamdan was the second son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Latifa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan. He grow up in the Trucial States which consisted of seven sheikdoms that then united and formed the United Arab Emirates.

His brother Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President/Prime Minister of the UAE and the King of Dubai shared the devastating news on his Twitter account. He wrote “We belong to God and to him we should return. May God have mercy on you my brother, my support and my companion”.

Sheikh Hamdan’s former school began in Dubai. He did his early – schooling at the Al Madrasah al Ahlia school in Dubai. He then completed his further studies at the Bell School of Languages in between 1967 and 1968 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Sheikh Hamdan became the first minister of Finance and Industry in the UAE in 1971 which was a position he occupied until his death. On the 4th January 1995, he was appointed as the deputy ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Hamdan established his first racing stable, Shadwell Racing, in the United Kingdom in 1981. Apart from his passion for horses he also liked hunting and dhow racing.
